A total of 369 companies made it onto Crain's Chicago Business' annual ranking of the area's largest privately held companies. The list is ranked by 2017 annual revenue and includes companies with revenues ranging from $75 million to $78 billion.
As a group, these companies have combined revenues of roughly $369 billion and are responsible for more than 179,000 full-time jobs in the metro area. Globally, they employ more than 746,000 people. The average revenue growth rate for all was 8.6 percent.
Of all the companies, 78 percent reported (or were estimated to have had) revenue growth in 2017. Among them, two stand out with growth rates over 100 percent.
Raise, large enough to make this ranking for the first time with $80 million in revenue, was estimated by Crain's to have grown 167 percent last year. Meal-kit delivery service
Home Chef reported a 156 percent increase to $255 million in sales last year. Another 96 companies saw double-digit revenue growth in 2017.
State Farm tops the list with $78.3 billion in 2017 revenue. Though the company's headquarters are in McLean County, outside the seven-county Chicago area, Crain's makes an exception due to its size. The top four companies—State Farm, Health Care Service Corp., Reyes Holdings and Topco Associates—all held on to their spots since last year. At No. 5, Medline Industries edged out Havi Group by a margin of $140 million.
This ranking, while not an exhaustive list of private companies in the Chicago area, is the most comprehensive available and the largest it's ever been. Thirty-two newcomers joined this year. Some grew into the list, while others reported revenue or were estimated by Crain's for the first time. Most information is voluntarily disclosed by the companies. Figures estimated by Crain's are derived from various outside sources. The list includes firms in the seven-county region: Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, Lake (Ind.), McHenry and Will. It also includes headcounts, top executives and more analysis of industries and companies. To get the full ranking of Chicago's privately held companies, go to
